YouTube star’s hubby arrested

IPOH: Just days after YouTube cooking sensation Sugu Pavithra, comprising S. Pavithra and her husband M. Sugu, received a commendation from the Prime Minister and the Ipoh mayor, Sugu has been arrested for allegedly carrying a sickle to a hospital.

Police are also investigating claims that Sugu, 29, has hit his 28-year-old wife.

The Magistrate Court’s here granted a three-day remand order for Sugu yesterday.

He will be investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz confirmed the arrest.

“Investigation is ongoing, ” he said.

According to sources, Sugu allegedly hit Pavithra at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun on Tuesday.

“Pavithra was visiting a relative who was in labour.

“Her husband, who was said to be drunk, had a dispute with her and hit her, ” the source said, adding that the man had also brought a sickle to the hospital.

“The dispute is believed to be over the fact that Pavithra didn’t mention his name when receiving an award on Monday, ” the source added.

On that occasion, Pavithra was bestowed Ipoh City icon, a title given exclusively to Ipoh-born individuals for their success.

She was awarded by Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

A relative of the couple said they would be taking a break from any brand engagement activities for several weeks.

“Right now, they would like to take some time off to focus on their personal lives, ” he said.

Pavithra and Sugu, who live in Sungai Siput with their two sons, rose to fame with their series of cooking videos under the Sugu Pavithra YouTube channel during the movement control order period.

The channel now boasts over 780,000 subscribers.

Besides her cooking, homemaker Pavithra has received much praise and attention for her humble personality and fluent use of Bahasa Malaysia in her videos.

On July 9, the duo were invited to the launch of the 50th anniversary of Rukunegara in Putrajaya, which was attended by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Previously, the Prime Minister has notably gifted them a camera tripod, a microwave oven, a rice cooker and cooking utensils.
