GEORGE TOWN: A college student and her boyfriend have been remanded for six days to assist in the investigation into the death of a newborn after the baby was thrown out from an apartment unit.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the 18-year-old girl is still being detained at Penang Hospital for further treatment and counselling sessions.

"So far, she is in a healthy condition and according to the doctor, she is expected to be discharged on Monday (July 13) evening," he said.

ACP Soffian said the girl's boyfriend, also 18, will be remanded at the Bayan Baru central lockup.

On Friday (July 10), a newborn baby girl died after she was allegedly tossed out by her mother from a 13th floor apartment unit in Bandar Baru Ayer Itam.

A resident had lodged a police report after being told that the body of a newborn girl was found on the road near the apartment's parking area.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
