Teen mum throws newborn from fourth floor flat, baby girl survives


BALIK PULAU: An 18-year-old shop assistant allegedly threw her newborn baby from the balcony of a fourth floor flat in Bayan Lepas to prevent her parents from finding out she had just given birth.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt A. Anbalagan said the teenager admitted she gave birth to a baby girl at around 7am on Wednesday (May 13).

“The suspect’s parents were in Kelantan when the incident occurred and two siblings staying with her also did not know about the birth.

“The suspect hid her pregnancy from her family. She later revealed that the father of the baby was her 18-year-old boyfriend, whom the police have identified, ” he said.

Supt Anbalagan said there were alerted to the incident at about 10am after someone heard an object falling on roof.

“According to an independent witness at the scene, a flat occupant on the ground floor heard a loud bang when something fell on the roof of his house at about 8am on Wednesday.

Supt Anbalagan an investigation officer together with the Penang contingent police headquarters forensic team went to the scene and found the newborn in a backpack on the ground floor behind the block of flats.

“The baby girl was bloodied but still breathing. There were injuries to the baby’s head, ” he said.

“The baby and suspect were sent to Penang Hospital for treatment, ” he said in a statement on Wednesday (May 13).

He added that police went to the suspect’s house to obtain some blood samples and clothing for analysis.

“The case will be investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by a parent or person having care of it or custodian, ” he said.
