Take measures to avoid retrenching staff, PM urges employers

PUTRAJAYA: Employers should take measures to avoid having to retrench their staff during the movement control order (MCO) period, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said such measures could include limiting overtime and reducing the working days in a week.

He said that employers must also follow guidelines issued by the Human Resources Ministry on how to manage issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic at workplaces.

This includes quarantine orders, sick leave and retrenchments.

"It is my hope that all workers and employers can embrace the new working culture while we continue to fight the pandemic.

"God willing, we will win," he said on Friday (May 1).

In conjunction with Labour Day, the Prime Minister recorded his appreciation to all workers in the country, particularly the frontliners.

"This year's Labour Day is not as how it is usually celebrated. There is no mass gathering because of Covid-19. Furthermore, it falls during Ramadan.

"Even though there is no celebration, do know that the contribution of all workers, both in the public and private sector is highly appreciated by the government," he said.
