Clerk loses RM54k in online face mask scam in Melaka

ALOR GAJAH: A 37-year-old clerk lost RM54,000 in a face-mask scam online on March 15.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu said the clerk had corresponded with a woman on WhatsApp to order 3,364 boxes of face masks on that date.

"The fraudster asked the woman to deposit the amount into a bank account provided by her," he said Tuesday (March 24).

Supt Arshad said the woman deposited the money in two transactions between March 16 and March 17 at a bank here.

"The clerk was promised that the consignment of the face masks would reach her home by 8pm on March 18," he said.

However, Supt Arshad said the clerk felt she was cheated and decided to lodge a police report a few days ago.

He added that an investigation has been initiated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
