PETALING JAYA: MCA leaders paid tribute to former minister and ex-party secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Chong Hon Nyan (pic), whose immense contributions were remembered.
Among those who knew Chong well was former MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
“He was an honourable man who helped guide young leaders. He was a fatherly figure, always polite and humble.
“I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, ” Liow said yesterday.
Chong, who was MCA’s Batu Berendam MP in Melaka for three consecutive terms from 1974 to 1986, died on Sunday at the age of 96.He held several posts in the government, including as deputy finance minister, transport minister and health minister.
Liow, also a former health and transport minister, said he got to know Chong while working with the Melaka MCA secretariat just after completing Form 6 in 1981.
“Tan Sri Chong was Melaka MCA chairman at that time and I was working at the secretariat for about six months before enrolling in university.
“I eventually got to know his family too, ” Liow said.
He added that he kept in touch with Chong’s daughter Dr Chong Su-Lin when he (Liow) was the Health Minister later on.
Liow said Chong was instrumental in bringing in fresh talent into the party.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong expressed his condolences to the bereaved family, saying: “His passing is a huge loss to the community and nation. His contributions and services will be remembered.”
Chong also leaves behind wife Puan Sri Chong Eu Ngoh, son David Chong Weng Kwai, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
The wake will end today at 3, Lorong Kota Empat, Bukit Ledang, Kuala Lumpur.
The funeral service will be held at Kuala Lumpur Wesley Church at 10am tomorrow before the cortege leaves for the Nirvana Memorial Park in Shah Alam.
