BATU PAHAT: Some 500 Batu Pahat PKR members have quit the party and declared their support for Perikatan Nasional.
They include its division deputy chief, division Wanita chief and division Youth chief.
Batu Pahat PKR deputy chief Pek Hwee Seong said they were disappointed with the state PKR leadership council (MPN) for taking over the division after its chief Datuk Rashid Hasnon left the party.
"Previously, we choose to remain in PKR and not leave the party but when the MPN announced that they would take over the Batu Pahat division on Wednesday (March 11), we were disappointed.
"Hence, we have decided to quit the party today and declare our support for Perikatan Nasional," he said in a press conference near the Batu Pahat Parliament office here on Thursday (March 12).
He said the party's decision to take over the division is not in line with Article 37.4 of PKR's constitution, which states that if there is a vacuum in the division chief position, its deputy chief should be given the post.
Also present at the press conference was Rashid, who is now an independent MP after leaving the party along with 10 other MPs.
