PETALING JAYA: Actress Sangeeta Krishnasamy was left “speechless” after watching the Eye On The Ball feature film, which highlights the Malaysian blind football team’s struggles and efforts to represent the country.
“I was so moved (by the film) that I’m left speechless,” said the Adiwiraku star, who watched the film in a private screening.
“Watching the film made me feel that, in comparison, I’m not doing enough for our society - I’m not working enough to help overcome the issues some parts of our society face.”
Eye On The Ball follows the Malaysian blind football team as they, emboldened by their victory at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games, attempt to qualify for the World Cup of blind football.
Sangeeta was full of praise for the team’s passionate coach, Sunny Shalesh, who assembled a team of part-time masseurs and students and trained them to become world-class athletes through the Pan-Disability Football Club.
“I think, without coach Sunny, we might not have a team as fantastic as the one we have now, because he is so motivational,” she said.
“Watching how he trained them and made them Asian champions - it was very, very inspiring.”
Eye On The Ball, directed by filmmaker Chen Yih Wen from the award-winning Star Media Group R.AGE team, will premiere on March 19.
The film aims to raise support for the team, whose series of losses at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games meant they lost their full-time status and support like access to the National Sports Council's (MSN) housing and medical care.
To help the team continue representing Malaysia on the world stage, a portion of the film proceeds will go to the Pan-Disability Football Club.
Sangeeta called on all Malaysians to do their bit to support the team by watching the film.
“I feel like all Malaysians actually want to contribute to something. So I think, if everyone talks about this film on social media, and then goes to watch it in the cinemas, it will be a form of contributing to the blind football club.“It was a real shock to me to find out that our 2015 Asian champions don’t even have permanent training grounds... I hope this film reaches out to people. The blind are just like us, so why not support them?”
