MIRI: Sarawak PKR has launched its state election machinery for northern Sarawak.
The symbolic launch was held at the Miri PKR state election operation centre in the city centre on Sunday (Feb 16) night, during the Miri PKR Chinese New Year open house.
At the launch was PKR national Youth chief Akmal Nasir; Miri MP Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng, who is also PKR state election director for northern Sarawak; Datuk Romli Ishak who is political secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Ismail and Miri Pakatan Harapan component party leaders.
Dr Teo said Sarawak PKR will use Miri as its base to cover election preparation for not just Miri but also Baram, Lawas and other northern constituencies.
"There are indications that the state election is already very near.
"Even though the deadline for the (12th) state polls is about one year and five months away, the latest indications are that there could be a snap election within the year.
"We cannot be caught off guard and PKR, as a Pakatan component party, is activating its ground workers now.
"We have already trained our core team of on-ground election workers for the northern seats.
"In the Miri parliamentary constituency, we are confident of sweeping all the three state seats of Piasau, Senadin and Pujut.
"I won the Miri parliamentary seat by about 14,000 votes during the last general election.
"I won in polling stations in Piasau by about 4,000 votes, Senadin by 6,000 votes and Pujut by 4,000 votes.
"Pakatan will capture all three seats this time around," he told The Star.
Piasau and Senadin are currently held by Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) while incumbent Pujut DAP assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon was stripped of his seat after the Federal Court ruled that he had held Australian citizenship when he contested and won in the last state polls.
SUPP is a component of the state's ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.
Asked which Pakatan party would contest in Piasau, Pujut and Senadin in this coming state polls, Dr Teo said the coalition will decide on it at the national level soon.
More than 1,000 people attended the Miri PKR Chinese New Year open house.
Dr Teo also announced the setting up of a counter at the PKR operations centre to handle Peka B40 health incentive applications for those with monthly household income of RM4,000 and below.
