Body of hero policeman recovered 36 hours after he went missing at sea

KOTA KINABALU: The body of a General Operations Force corporal who helped save victims of a boating accident on Thursday (Feb 13) morning before going missing has been found at 6.30pm on Friday (Feb 14).

Corporal Asman Ongkal’s remains were found close to the scene of where a passenger boat with 37 people (including Asman) hit into the tow ropes of a fishing vessel tugging a smaller boat near the Sandakan market jetty at 5.40am on Thursday (Feb 13).

The body was floating close to the Sandakan district mosque that sits along the coastline of the east coast Sabah town.

His body was taken to the Duchess of Kent hospital for a post-mortem.

Cpl Asman’s wife Roslina Sari, who was seen weeping, was at the marine police jetty as the search operations were in progress.

According to survivors, Asman helped in the rescue of passengers on the boat that was ferrying mainly students.

Three people, including the skipper of the boat, were critically injured while 12 others were admitted to the hospital for treatment and observation.

The passenger boat was from Kg Tanjung Aru and headed for Sandakan town.
