SK Stella Marris closed for a week amid claims of students infected with H1N1

KOTA KINABALU: A primary school in Tanjung Aru here was ordered to be closed for a week from Wednesday (Jan 22) amid claims of students there suspected of being infected with H1N1.

SK Stella Marris put up a notice of the closure on their school notice board, stating it would be closed from Jan 22 to Jan 28 following a directive from the Kota Kinabalu Health Department.

Neither State Health and People Well-being Minister Datuk Frankie Poon nor Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi were available for immediate comment as the notice went viral on social media.

A notice under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 was issued on Tuesday (Jan 21).

The notice said the school will be closed while authorities carry out clean-up works of the school as part of measures to ensure the prevention of any contagious viruses or diseases.

However, the notice did not indicate if the closure was due to several cases of H1N1 detected among students in the school.

Parents said they were unaware of the sudden closure of the school but they heard talk of six students suspected to have been infected with the H1N1 virus.

Most schools in Sabah will close from Thursday (Jan 23) for the Chinese New Year holidays beginning Saturday (Jan 25).
