GEORGE TOWN: MCA hopes things will be back to normal with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) grants, with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed taking over as acting Education Minister.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said Dr Mahathir was the Education and Finance Minister before, and he knows how the system works.
"Hopefully, the earlier mechanism of disbursing grants is implemented rather than the present system, where it's divided into development and operation expenditure.
"Nowhere in the world where such a system is implemented, and with Tun at the helm, we would like to see things getting back to normal rather than the present 'strange' arrangement," said Dr Wee after officiating the Penang MCA TAR UC fundraising dinner at Penang Chinese Town Hall on Monday (Jan 13) night.
"The Finance Minister asked for four representatives and we gave them the names, but its been three months, but yet to be approved.
Speaking earlier at the dinner, Dr Wee said the accusation that MCA interferes with the running of TAR UC was unfounded, as it has a hands-off approach in the management.
"If anyone has proof of wrongdoings in the management they should take the necessary action and not politicise the issue.
"Everything is run by the book, and every money collected is accounted for.
On the fundraising dinner, Dr Wee said the state MCA had raised RM300,000 at the dinner.
"It's heartening to note that the collection increased from RM218,000 to RM300,000 in a single night.
On a question if he is going around the country to raise funds for the institution, Dr Wee said people are calling to donate.
"Even the people here tonight are not only party members, but grassroot supporters and hawkers who want to contribute towards TAR UC.
Also present were former MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and state MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.
