Badminton: Kento Momota hurt in accident on MEX Expressway, van driver killed

SERDANG: A van driver, who was ferrying badminton players, was killed while several top international badminton players were hurt in a crash, including 26-year-old World Number One Kento Momota (pic).

It is learnt that the van had crashed into a lorry at KM13.7 of the MEX highway (Maju Expressway) on Monday (Jan 13) morning.

The other international players hurt were Britain's William Thomas, 30, and Japanese players - Hirayama Yu, 35, and Morimoto Arkifumi, 42.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Hafisham Mohd Noor said the department received a call on the accident at 4.57am.

"We believe the accident occurred when the van driver had crashed the vehicle into the back of the lorry.

"The badminton players suffered minor injuries and they have been sent to Putrajaya Hospital for treatment.

"The van driver has been identified as N. Bavan, 20," he said.

A total of 10 firemen were involved in the operation, he added.
