MACC action shows lack of professionalism, says Tok Mat

SEREMBAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's move to make public the contents of nine audio recordings allegedly incriminating former top government officials, including Datuk Seri Najib Razak, clearly lacked professionalism, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Umno deputy president said the MACC should have handed over any new evidence regarding the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) to the police rather than going public.

"What the MACC did was unprecedented.

"The MACC must be professional, but what it did clearly was way off the standards of professionalism," he said.

Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said it was wrong to make public a conversation between the country's leader and his foreign counterpart as these were private and confidential.

It should not have not been made public without having gone through the legal process.

"This will also create unnecessary problems with the United Arab Emirates government. The MACC should know that it is important that Malaysia does not get into any conflict with any country as we search for the truth with regard to the 1MDB scandal," he said, adding that the police would now have to thoroughly probe the new evidence.

MACC chief Latheefa Koya had said that the recordings were made public so that there would not be any more attempts to undermine independent bodies.

She alleged that the audio conversations pointed to "serious power abuse, criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice and compromising national security".

These, she said, were made public after MACC investigations confirmed the "absolute authenticity" of the recordings.

Mohamad said by making the audio recordings public, those allegedly associated with them were already being judged to be guilty.

"There is now a deep prejudice against them. The MACC, as a public institution, must carry out its duties credibly and according to the law.

"But what the commission did has only brought its professionalism and integrity into question," he added.
