MELAKA: The business community at Jalan Bunga Raya here is set to unveil a mechanical crank decoration that allows greeting flowers to move up and down for the upcoming Lunar New Year.
The site of decoration will be kept secret until it is launched by Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong on Thursday (Jan 9).
The street, which is the oldest commercial hub in Melaka, will also be set aglow with festive lights to welcome the Year of the Rat.
The street has been adorned with auspicious props and lanterns at a cost of RM100,000.
Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong was given the chance to place one of the lanterns where the mechanical crank decoration is located.
“I was also not allowed to take a preview of the decoration site as the business community wants to give the locals a surprise on the creative idea of ushering the festival, ” he said when met on Tuesday (Jan 7).
Low said various programmes have also been planned for the Lunar New Year that are steeped in Melaka’s traditions and culture.
"This year, we hope to strengthen our unity by inviting Melakans from various backgrounds to join the Chinese New Year celebrations, ” he said.
