Bushfire reported close to Penang airport

GEORGE TOWN: A fire behind Penang International Airport's cargo terminal had passengers and the social media in a frenzy.

Thick white smoke could be seen billowing from behind the terminal as the airport's fire engine rushed towards the fire at about 1.20pm.

Fortunately, according to the Fire and Rescue Department, the smoke was not from a fire in the airport but from a bushfire outside its perimeter.

AirAsia government relations manager (northern region) Kenneth Tan said the fire was over the airport's fence.

Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd senior manager Mohd Nadzim Hashim said no flights were delayed by the smoke.

He said fire engines from the airport rushed to the fence and had been put on standby.
