IPOH: Police will step up surveillance on online gambling syndicate operations in the state, says the Perak police chief.

Comm Datuk Razarudin Husain said police officers would be stationed at strategic locations throughout the state to collect intelligence on such operations.

On Wednesday, police arrested 18 Chinese nationals involved in online gambling in Lahat.

Comm Datuk Razarudin said police seized 46 mobile phones, 16 laptops and RM734 during the bust.

“Based on our investigation, we believe that they are targeting the market in China, ” he said, adding that the group used the WeChat mobile app to make transactions.

“Even though they are only targeting the Chinese market, we will continue to counter the illegal activity, ” he said, adding the arrests were not related to those made by the Immigration Department this week.

“Our target is to ensure there are no more such cases in the state. We will place our officers in certain areas in Manjung, Taiping and other districts to conduct surveillance and raids, ” he told reporters after a shooting test held in conjunction with the Police 212th Memorial Day here yesterday.

Sixty-five Chinese nationals, believed to be operating an online scam, were nabbed by the Immigration at Gerbang Maju Rapat near here on Wednesday.

This followed a similar raid at a bungalow in Jalan Tun Dr Ismail by the department on Monday, where 40 Chinese nationals were arrested.

Comm Razarudin believed that the online gambling operation started about two weeks ago.

“Based on the items seized and similar raids done in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, we believe that they moved here to continue their operation, ” he said.
