SEREMBAN: A 51-year-old man claimed trial for allegedly cheating a company of more than RM12.17mil over a non-existent housing project more than two years ago.

Zakaria M. Abdul Razak pleaded not guilty to the charge before Sessions Court judge Diana Mohd Razali on Monday (Dec 2).

The accused had allegedly cheated Zhu Xuefeng, a representative of Huaren Construction Group, that a Prefer 1Malaysia project would be developed in Taboh Naning in Melaka.

The company then transferred the amount into an account belonging to Ruas Rimbun Sdn Bhd.

He allegedly committed the offence with another suspect, who is still at large, between Oct 10,2016 and May 15,2017.

Ruas Rimbun is the main contractor for Marak Strategi Sdn Bhd, of which Zakaria was a director.

The accused was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Act.

The offence carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction.

Diana fixed Jan 7 next year for re-mention.

She also allowed the accused to be freed on a RM300,000 bail and ordered him to surrender his passport to the court.
