Haze: King advises people to reduce outdoor activities, drink more water, stop open burning

PETALING JAYA: The King has advised everyone to reduce outdoor activities, drink more water and stop open burning to counter the effects of the worsening haze.

In a statement released by Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, Yang di-Pertuan Agung Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah expressed his concern over the unhealthy air pollution index (API).

"The King advised the people to be aware of the air quality and take preventive measures to lower the health effects of the haze," said the statement Thursday (Sept 12).

It further said that the people should rely on official government agency portals, as well as mass media for accurate information on the haze.

The statement also said that the King advised that there should be no open burning.

"All landowners must ensure their lands or premises are not encroached to conduct open burning by irresponsible individuals.

"His Highness also advised those with chronic illnesses to reduce outdoor activities and use face masks to further reduce exposure to the haze," said Ahmad Fadil.

The country has been enveloped in haze over the past few days, and some areas have recorded unhealthy API readings.

The Health Ministry had advised everyone to avoid outdoor activities if the API readings exceed 100.

This is especially pertinent to children and those suffering from respiratory illnesses and heart problems, as they would be more affected by exposure to haze, said health director-general, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

People should also follow the latest developments regarding the haze and check the API in their location by visiting the Environmental Department at http://apims.doe.gov.my/ and adhering to the authorities' recommendations, he said.
