Canada's Justin Trudeau is part Malaysian

PETALING JAYA: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has Malaysian roots!

He said this during a recent interview on the comedy show Patriot Act, which is hosted by Hasan Minhaj.

“I’m like one-sixteenth Malaysian. Or one 32nd, ” he said when asked if he was the "White Panther of Wacanada", a play of words on the Black Panther of Wakanda.

With an upcoming election in the North American country in October, Trudeau was grilled on various scandals and policies that have rocked his tenure.

Last year, the Canadian High Commission had presented Malaysian premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad a photograph of his meeting with a then 11-year-old Justin in 1982.

Justin was there with his father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who was Canada’s premier then.

Former ministers, the late Tun Ghazali Shafie and the late Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Daud, were also seen accompanying Dr Mahathir in the picture.

Justin, 47, was sworn in as Canada’s youngest prime minister in 2015, while Dr Mahathir is Malaysia’s and the world’s oldest premier.

A conflict-of-interest case involving a Canadian engineering company has seen Trudeau’s ratings drop to all-time lows.
