KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2,926 taxi drivers in the Federal Territories have benefited from more than RM200,000 contribution by Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP) to the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SEEIS).
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said YWP had collaborated with both Socso and the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to implement the programme to help taxi drivers contribute to Socso.
"The coverage package of the Socso contribution is worth RM157.20 a year for a taxi driver. The overall cost from the implementation of the programme is RM201,988.90," he told reporters at Wisma YWP on Tuesday (Sept 3).
In June, Khalid, who is also YWP chairman, had announced that the foundation would pay for the taxi driver's SEEIS contribution for this year after their incomes were badly hit by the rise of e-hailing services.
Khalid said the programme by YWP was implemented based on three categories - the first of which was for taxi drivers who were registered and had made active payments to Socso.
Contributions for category one, he added, was for six months starting from July until December 2019 or from January to June 2020, depending on the end date of the contribution.
He said 81 people benefited from this with a total of RM6,366.60.
Under the second category involving taxi drivers who had registered with Socso but not paid their contributions, Khalid said YWP has helped to make payment between July and December 2019.
"Under this category, 708 taxi drivers were involved with a total payout of RM55,648.80," he said.
Khalid said payments were also made to taxi drivers under Category three, who were not registered with Socso, but had since registered themselves under this programme held in June.
"Since the start of this programme in June, YWP and Socso have carried out promotions so that taxi drivers could register under Socso to receive the benefits of this programme.
"Since then, 2,137 taxi drivers have registered with Socso and YWP has contributed from July to December a total of RM139,973.50," he said.
Khalid also urged taxi drivers who had yet to register to do so under this programme, adding that it would be reopened until Sept 16 in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day.
