WONG SHU QI

KUALA LUMPUR: The DAP, by using pornography to explain the use of Jawi to the Chinese, has insulted the community and indirectly hurt the feelings of people, especially the Malays, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president was referring to a report in a portal where DAP's Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi was quoted as saying, “The Chinese will have a better understanding of Jawi when pornography is used as an example.”

The video clip, which was circulated, showed the 35-year-old Wong addressing Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Kluang last week. The clip shows Wong using porn as an example of the usage of Jawi.

Jawi is a hot topic after Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik announced that khat (Jawi calligraphy) would be in taught in the Bahasa Melayu curriculum for Year Four from next year.

Questioning Wong's choice of using pornography, Dr Wee in his Facebook post Tuesday (Aug 13) asked: “Is she saying Chinese like pornography? This is an insult.”

The MCA president said there were so many other examples that could have been used.

“Why not use examples like old advertisement posters, like those in film shows, food products and beverages?

Wong came under fire when the clip, titled “Jawi writing used in pornographic books at one point, says DAP”, was circulated.

Wong confirmed that the clip was her presentation on Friday (Aug 9).

On Monday (Aug 12) Wong told a Malay-language portal that the “explanation on Jawi would be easier to understand for the Chinese when done in a ‘not serious’ context”.

Wong maintained that it was not wrong of her to use pornography as an example, claiming that by doing so, she had succeeded in changing the perception of the Chinese community who had all along assumed Jawi is only for Islam.

But Dr Wee said he did not think the Chinese would not understand the use of Jawi if other examples were used.

“She still refused to apologise for using pornography as an example despite hurting the feelings of many, especially the Malays, ” he said.

He chided Wong for saying that her presentation on using pornography as an example was recorded without her permission.

“But she (Wong) was telling the Chinese NGOs loudly that she was aware of people recording but she was not worried because it was the truth.

“Why then make a U-turn after the recording was circulated?” said Dr Wee.

Meanwhile, MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker questioned Wong's motive for making fun of Jawi by linking it to pornography.

He said Wong's claim that what she said on pornography and Jawi was taken out of context by Umno and MCA did not make sense.

“The recording is original, showing the Kluang MP joking and laughing, while reminding (her audience) not to let the religious extremists know about it.

“The fact is she has insulted Islam and Jawi by associating them with pornography, ” he said.

Ti added that the DAP should ask Wong to apologise instead of blaming people who recorded her presentation.
