Storm lashes Penang, leaving trail of damage

BUTTERWORTH: A strong gush of wind was all it took to wreak havoc and injure five people as objects crashed and toppled on them here on Friday night (Aug 9).

Penang welfare and caring society committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the five injured men were sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.

Two motorcyclists were also reported to have been injured in the storm.

Dozens of trees in the state were uprooted, while zinc panels were torn apart during the 11pm storm which lasted about 30 minutes.

Many took to social media to voice their concerns and shared images of fallen trees and branches, signboards, zinc panels and the damage left behind.

The Malaysia Meteorological Department has confirmed that the storm was a side effect of Typhoon Lekima heading toward eastern China.

But the storm quietened down and things were back to normal by 11.45pm.
