PETALING JAYA: The government will always pay attention to improving unity and harmony in the country, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Prime Minister said that cooperation and tolerance among the various religions, races and cultures has been the key to the country's success all this time.

“Malaysia will fail if there is no unity among the rakyat. Although there have been some small incidents, the overall unity among the people is stable and good.

“The efforts to increase unity among the people does not rest on the shoulders of the government alone, it is a collective responsibility, ” said Dr Mahathir at the installation of Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Tuesday (July 30).

Dr Mahathir said in order to maintain and enhance efforts to maintain peace and harmony, the gvernment has formed the Consultative Council for People's Harmony (Majlis Perundingan Keharmonian Rakyat), which will act as an independent body to advise the administration on issues related to unity and social well-being.

“I hope that these efforts by the government will continue to get support to achieve its aim, ” he added.

Dr Mahathir also said that the government will continue to uphold the Federal Constitution, the rule of law, and to ensure democracy remains for the stability of the nation.

Measures to improve governance and integrity, while curbing corruption, have been continuously taken to ensure that no one is above the law.

“The same transparency principles will also be enhanced as a check-and-balance mechanism for the government, ” he said.

He added that the government is serious in tackling all the problems that have affected the rakyat's well-being and damaged the image of the country on the international platform.
