MIRI: Voluntary firefighters have proven their usefulness in rural Sarawak yet again, this time at the Long Ikang longhouse in the interior of Baram district.

Their training and quick action saved some 1,000 folks in the longhouse from a major fire that would have razed their homes located in northern Sarawak early yesterday.

A fire broke out shortly after midnight at the longhouse that has 74 doors, but this was swiftly doused by the community fire fighters.

The Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said the fire started at one of the kitchens.

“The fire spread to three adjacent kitchens.

“The voluntary firefighting unit managed to douse the fire before it spread further, and averted a major disaster,” said Supt Law, who added that the Long Ikang voluntary firefighting unit was trained and equipped by the Miri Fire and Rescue Department.

Long Ikang is about four hours by land and river from Miri.
