Robbery gang busted with arrest of 'Amy Keju' ringleader

KUALA LUMPUR: The "Amy Keju" robbery gang, which has been active for the past three years, has been busted after the arrest of its leader, says Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed.

Comm Huzir said that the suspect, a 32-year-old man, was arrested at an entertainment outlet in Sungai Besi on Sunday (June 23) along with his brother.

"The gang has been active for a few years. They were responsible for the robbery at a jewellery store in Rawang recently," he said at a press conference on Monday (June 24).

A total of three jewellery stores and a security van were among the previous targets of the gang.

Comm Huzir added that the group had about 40 to 44 active members, and seven of then are already behind bars.

"This suspect has quite a long criminal record. We believe he recruited members for his gang when he was in jail previously," he said.

On another matter, Comm Huzir said that the police are ramping up the fight against vice, including illegal gambling and prostitution.

"From June 19, police have raided 926 illegal gambling outlets and arrested 1,462 suspects," he said.

He said this was an 84% increase in their arrest and raid statistics over the previous week.

Comm Huzir also said that the police have identified 55 prostitution syndicates operating in Malaysia.

"Action will be taken during phase two, after the issue of gambling has been settled," he said.

Comm Huzir added that the police would rely on the Security Offences Special Measures Act (Sosma).

"The Home Ministry is in the final stages of studying the law, which will be brought up in Parliament for debate in future sessions," he said.

The moratorium on the controversial law was lifted after the 2018 riots at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25.
