PAS lawmaker asks for government to vet drama scripts with Islamic content

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior PAS lawmaker has called on the government to vet the scripts of television dramas with Islamic content, to ensure it is in line with the religion.

Kuala Nerus MP Datuk Dr Khairuddin Aman Razali (pic) said that he recently watched an episode of television drama on TV Alhijrah that promoted the culture of differences and dispute (khilaf) among Islamic scholars, and added that the way the drama was portrayed was confusing.

"I was worried about the female actress who acted as an ustazah. She had used a loose script without any proper references. I urge the relevant Ministry in charge to look back at the script and refer it to the Federal Territories mufti," he said when debating the motion of thanks to the royal address.

The PAS lawmaker said the show had attempted to discuss different opinions on women entering the mosque to take photos during a wedding ceremony.

"I urge that all dramas that touch on Islamic matters, or the religion, to be referred to the Federal Territory mufti first. Perhaps, a special committee can be set up to look at the scripts of all dramas," he said.
