More than 900 police reports lodged over insults on Islam and Prophet Muhammad

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 929 police reports have been lodged over insults on Islam, Prophet Muhammad and his wife, Siti Aisyah, says Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun (pic).

The Inspector-General of Police said based on the reports, police have opened 16 investigation papers.

The four most recent cases involved three Facebook users and another on Twitter.

"The first case involved Facebook user Bakakuk, who insulted Islam and the Prophet.

"We received 15 police reports on the matter, as of March 5. The suspect, Mohd Sharulnizam Stanley Sigan, has been detained in Labuan on March 3 and remanded until March 7," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 5).

The second case involved Alister Anak Cogia, 22, who made similar insults via Facebook account "Ayea Yea", he added.

"He was detained in Bau, Sarawak, on March 4 and remanded until March 7, following 10 police reports lodged," he said.

Police also detained Mohd Yazid Kong, 52, over his crude comments on Islam via Facebook, the IGP said.

"He has been detained on March 4.

"We also identified Alvin Chow Mun Fai, 43, who insulted the prophet via Twitter account @Alvinchow33. We believe he is in Kuala Lumpur and we are in the process of tracking him down," he said.

Mohamad Fuzi said all the cases are being investigated under the Multimedia and Communication Act 1998, and he advised the public not to misuse social media or other forms of communication to upload provocative postings that touched on religious and racial sensitivities.

"Such acts will spark tensions among the people of various races and religions, thus it must be stopped at once.

"We will take stern action against any party who still commit such offensive acts," the IGP said.
