Man charged with Valentine's Day MRT mugging pleads not guilty (Updated)


KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old aircond repairman pleaded not guilty at a Sessions court here to robbing a bank manager at an MRT station lift on Valentine's Day.

G. Thinathayaalan was accused of robbing and voluntarily causing hurt to Lee Meei Shan, 40, with intention of taking her identification card, driver's licence, bank cards and RM400 in cash.

The offence was allegedly committed inside the lift at MRT Taman Mutiara, Cheras, at 6.45am on Feb 14.

He was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code and faces imprisonment up to 20 years and could be whipped if found guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor N. Joy Jothi did not offer bail. 

“This case went viral. It happened inside a lift at an MRT station and there was a CCTV recording. 

“What happened was very cruel,” she told the court here on Friday (March 1). 

Sessions Court judge Mahyon Talib did not grant bail. She fixed the case for mention on March 15. 

The accused was unrepresented.
