MCA Youth: Speed up sex harassment probe

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA Youth has urged the police to speed up investigation into the alleged sexual harassment of an MCA leader on social media.

Its chief Nicole Wong said the matter was of public interest as the man’s action on Facebook amounted to “sexual harassment and cyberbullying”.

“He is the one who started the whole thing and it is a form of sexual harassment against the MCA leader and the rest of the women who came to her protection.

“Such an attitude cannot be tolerated. We urge the police to speed up the investigation so that the public will know what is happening,” she said during a press conference at Wisma MCA yesterday.

On Sunday, Pahang MCA Youth secretary Saw Yee Fung alleged that she was harassed on Facebook by a man believed to be a member from a political party.

Saw claimed that the man posted lies about her online which then culminated in a sexually explicit post.

She has since lodged a report at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters.

It is believed that the sexual harassment began when Saw managed to get a Penang exco member from the political party to sign a petition opposing the abolition of the death penalty.

Soon afterwards, the perpetrator and the group of netizens started harassing, bullying and humiliating Saw on social media.

According to Wong, the man, said to be Bagan DAP deputy Youth chief who harassed Saw, had now also lodged a counter report on Monday.

Wong said the man’s action to lodge a counter police report was “very odd and abnormal”.

“We find it ironic that he lodged a counter police report, claiming that he is the victim, and seemingly wanting to escape responsibility for what he did,” she said.

Meanwhile, Penang MCA urged Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow to look into the matter.

Its liaison committee spokesman Ooi Teik Liang handed over a memorandum to Chow, urging him to take stern action against their party member.

“Our Bagan MCA branch tried to hand over a memorandum to the Bagan DAP on Monday as we heard that the man is a Bagan DAP member.

“But they refused to accept the memorandum, saying the police would investigate.

“This is why we decided to hand over the memorandum here.

“We want him (Chow) to make a stand and take action.

“Their silence on the matter is not a good sign. We want them to address it and take disciplinary action,” he said.
