KUCHING: Sarawak will usher in the New Year with a countdown celebration and the launching of its Visit Sarawak campaign.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said thousands of people were expected to attend the event at the Kuching Waterfront on Dec 31.

"There will be a lot of activities starting from 5pm until midnight, including cultural performances and a concert by national and local artistes.

"Simultaneously, we will launch the Visit Sarawak campaign, which is very important in our effort to bring in more tourists, starting from next year," he told a press conference here on Thursday (Dec 20).

Unlike previous campaigns which only ran for one year at a time, Abdul Karim said the upcoming Visit Sarawak campaign would go on for the next few years, with the tagline "Sarawak: More to Discover".

"The year 2019 will be exciting for tourism. We have a lot of events lined up, starting with the Asian Television Awards in January.

"Every month, there will be something on," he said.

Abdul Karim added that the tourism campaign aimed to attract more foreign visitors to the state, including from Singapore, China and Europe.

"Sarawak has many things to offer foreign tourists, particularly in terms of culture, adventure and nature.

"The Rainforest World Music Festival will continue to be a major highlight, along with cultural and food festivals and international sports events," he said.

The campaign will be launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The evening's entertainment will also include a water show, lighting up of the Darul Hana pedestrian bridge and a video presentation by the Sarawak Tourism Board.

It will culminate with a fireworks display to welcome the New Year.
