SIBU: A woman has been arrested in connection with the sale of bogus overseas travel packages.

The 37-year old woman was on Wednesday (Dec 12) ordered by Sarikei Magistrate's Court to be remanded for nine days until Dec 21 for further mention of the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

A former Selangau MP had on Dec 7 lodged a police report that he was cheated by the suspect of RM8,000, which he deposited to her bank account for a tour package.

The 67-year-old former MP was introduced the package by a church priest in Bintangor, in conjunction with the church’s 100-year anniversary.

The priest himself was not aware that the package was a scam.

The package of RM12,500 per person was to Rome, Italy, Lourdes, France and Fatima, Portugal.

State commercial crime department chief, Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said on Wednesday that based on 15 reported cases which happened in Sarikei between March 2017 to June 2018, the victims lost a total of RM215,900.

The state police, with the assistance of their counterpart in Sabah, arrested the woman on Dec 6.
