Lau confident despite not having election machinery

PORT DICKSON: Independent by-election candidate Lau Seck Yan (pic) is more than happy to go around the town here with her husband to garner support.

The 51-year-old said she is confident of a good outing despite not having an election machinery and big names to back her campaign.

“The voters know what I stand for. I am happy with my husband by my side. My four daughters also gave moral support,” she said when met while campaigning in Linggi.

Lau said her daughters were unable to help as three were in university and the youngest is in secondary school.

“Although they are unable to help, they communicate with me via Skype and keep me posted on developments on social media,” she said.

On another matter, Lau took a swipe at Pakatan Harapan candidate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whom she said needed big names like Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to campaign for him.

“I’m not afraid,” she said of her opponents.

Lau said the majority of people she met during her campaign rounds was friendly.

“Almost all the people I met are kind. Based on what I have seen so far, I should do well,” she said, adding that there was no reason for her to be worried about losing her deposit.

Lau admitted that some constituents, especially the non-Chinese, did not know her name.

“At some places, they will just call me ‘arnab’ (rabbit), which is my candidate logo. I’m okay with that,” she said.

Lau claimed that she has received a lot of support on social media, with netizens pledging to return to Port Dickson to vote for her.

“They are supportive of my green campaign to use recycled paper while campaigning and my refusal to put up banners and buntings. They are hazardous to the environment and an eyesore,” she added.
