Malaysian Bar: Set up IPCMC as promised soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The Independent Police Complaint and Miscon­duct Commission (IPCMC) must be set up soon, says Malaysian Bar president George Varughese.

The setting up of IPMC was promised by Pakatan Harapan in its election manifesto and Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on his first day in office in May, also stated that the government would set up the institution, he said.

“The setting up of the IPCMC was one of the 125 recommendations made by the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation Manage­ment of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in its report published in May 2005.

“Although 13 years have passed since the IPCMC was first mooted, it remains relevant,” Varughese said in a statement recently.

The IPCMC is a police oversight body first proposed by the Royal Commission of Inquiry to improve the police force in 2005. It is to be an independent and external oversight organisation to investigate complaints against PDRM personnel.

Varughese said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun recently stated that PDRM had no objections to the IPCMC and had submitted a proposal to the government for consideration. — Bernama
