PETALING JAYA: Umno’s lawyers have given seven days to the police to provide relevant documents and information regarding the RM116.7mil cash that it seized from Pavilion Residences, Kuala Lumpur, during investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The lawyers issued a letter to the police requesting the information, and said in a statement that the cops are given seven days to comply.
“Our client reiterates that a substantial portion of the money seized belongs to Umno and has no relationship whatsoever with the case of 1MDB or SRC,” the statement read.
On Wednesday, the head of Umno's legal unit, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, said Scivetti & Associates, along with a team of lawyers led by Datuk Hariharan Tara Singh, had been appointed to claim the seized cash, which Umno claims is its political fund.
Police seized the cash during its raids at Pavilion Residences condos which were linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, as part of investigations into 1MDB.
After the discovery of the money there, Umno claimed that it belonged to the party.
It had claimed that the party constitution allowed for its president to source and manage party funds, including for the general elections.
