Muhyiddin: We’ll seek Indonesia’s help to bring Jamal back

KAJANG: The Home Ministry will seek the help of Indonesia to trace Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos, who is believed to have fled to Karimun Island.

Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Jamal would face justice in Malaysia if found guilty of the offences he had been charged with.

“I have asked Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun to get him.

“He is believed to be in Indonesia and we have asked for the cooperation of the Indonesian authorities to bring him back here,” Muhyiddin told the press after a buka puasa and prayer session with the staff of Kajang Prisons Department at its mosque, Masjid As-Saadah, yesterday.

Muhyiddin was responding to reports in a Chinese daily that Jamal absconded to Pulau Karimun, Indonesia, on May 27.

The island is 10km off the coast of south-western Johor and can be reached by boat from Kukup.

Muhyiddin said he would leave it to the police to act according to existing laws.

He chided the Sungai Besar Umno division chief on his plea to him (Muhyiddin) to ensure that he would not be mistreated in police custody.

“What protection is to be given? He knew that he had committed offences, then he ran away,” Muhyiddin said.

Jamal has been charged with committing several offences, including creating public nuisance by breaking bottles of alcohol to protest the Better Beer Festival at the Selangor state secretariat building on Oct 5.

Police said Jamal was being investigated for six cases.
