JPJ yet to update system to issue discounts

No good news: Many were left disappointed when they were told there were no discounts on offer at the JPJ branch in Petaling Jaya.

TEMERLOH: Although a 70% discount has been announced for compounds and summonses issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the department’s systems are still being updated for the purpose.

For now, the discount was being done manually, which meant that those who wish to enjoy it would have to request directly from the state JPJ director, said a Pahang JPJ spokesman.

She said the JPJ headquarters was working on updating the system within the next two days.

A check at the Temerloh JPJ counters found that there was no crowd trying to get the discount.

A staff member said there had not been any official order to offer the discount yet.

“So far, we have only had two people showing up to inquire about it,” he added.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi announced the month-long discount on Monday in conjunction with the department’s 72nd anniversary celebrations.

In Petaling Jaya, motorists hoping to get a 70% discount on their traffic summonses and fines were left disappointed yesterday morning when they were informed by officers at JPJ counters that they had received no such instructions.

The Star reader S. Lisa, who was at the JPJ office, said half the crowd of about 50 people left when an officer made the announcement at about noon.

“The JPJ office was crowded with people who mostly came to pay their summonses.

“The officer said he was not sure when the 70% discount would take effect.

“He said it could be Wednesday or the day after,” she added when interviewed yesterday.

JPJ deputy director-general (Planning and Operations) Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman said the department is finalising its system, so that the discount process can start soon.

“The system will be ready for payment as soon as possible,” said Wan Ahmad Uzir, who declined to name a date.

However, he said it could be as soon as today.
