PUTRAJAYA: While civil servants are hoping for good news during their meeting with the Prime Minister today, the rest of the country is wondering whether this will be the event that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announces the Parliament’s dissolution.
With pundits expecting the Dewan Rakyat to be dissolved on Friday, every function which Najib attends is closely watched in anticipation of the much awaited announcement.
This function – the annual civil service assembly – is no exception although organisers believe there will be no such announcement.
However, sources agreed that the event was held so that Najib could meet civil servants before the polls.
The last session was held in October, just about six months ago.
“This is an opportunity for the Prime Minister to address those in the civil service before the elections,” said a source.
Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda was confident that the Prime Minister would have solutions for issues affecting civil servants, particularly on ways to ease the high costs of living.
“And since the polls are near, the meeting is timely for the Prime Minister to deliver his message and address government officers,” said Azih.
In the 2013 general election, Najib announced the dissolution of Parliament on April 3, exactly four years after he took office in 2009.
The announcement – broadcast live via RTM – was made after he chaired the Cabinet meeting with all the ministers present.
Interestingly, today’s event will also be televised “live” with all the ministers, mentris besar, senior federal and state officers expected to be in attendance.
However, organisers insisted there was nothing unusual with this as it was the common practice.
“We have this event shown live every year,” said the same source.
The Prime Minister’s speech will be telecast live over RTM at 10am.
