Debate Anti-Fake News Bill, opposition MPs told

PENGERANG: Opposition lawma­kers should seize the opportunity to debate the Anti-Fake News Bill scheduled to be tabled in Par­liament, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The Minister in the Prime Minis­ter’s Department said that “they should not feel scared with the Bill if they are not guilty”.

“They should be mature and not feel intimidated by the proposed law,” she told reporters after presenting equipment to 65 fishermen from Kampung Penge­rang and Kampung Sungai Musuh here yesterday.

Azalina, who is de facto law mi­­nis­ter, added that the proposed law was meant as a preventive measure against the spread of fake news.

Azalina said she would meet members of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club after the first reading of the Bill on Monday and with the Opposition MPs on Tuesday or Wednesday.

On another issue, the Pengerang MP said the groundbreaking ceremony for the RM25mil Pengerang court building in Bandar Penawar, comprising a magistrate’s and a Sessions court, would take place next month.

She added that once the Pen­gerang magistrate’s and Sessions courts were in operation, those involved in legal cases would no longer need to travel to Kota Tinggi or Johor Baru.
