Group wants proper rules on short-term stays

PETALING JAYA: Given that Airbnb or homestay has become a global trend, the authorities should introduce rules and regulations that are in line with the trend, says Friends of Kota Damansara chairman Jeffrey Phang.

“Having said that, however, these rules should not hinder the growth of the tourism industry as more travellers prefer Airbnb-style lodging because of its lower cost and the local experience,” he said.

He suggested that the authorities introduce regulations on safety standards too.

Seri Setia New Village Develop­ment and Security Committee (JKKK) chairman Ding Eow Chai said he is not against Airbnb and homestay, but feels that homeowners are duty-bound to ensure that their guests do not cause trouble in the neighbourhood.

“There are sure to be issues when houses or residential units are leased frequently and on a short-term basis.

“So the owners must set rules to make sure their guests are well-behaved,” he said.

He is also all for the authorities to introduce rules, including limiting the number of guests and noise level, to better regulate the industry.
