Social media abuzz over marriage rumour

GEORGE TOWN: Social media is being flooded with news that there may be a happy ending for DAP couple Zairil Khir Johari and Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, whose relationship has been closely watched in recent years.

Talk is rife that the two are getting engaged in Ipoh today and it is understood that Zairil will be issuing an official statement.

This pair have tolerated the prying eyes of the public for years, with numerous exposes with grainy and badly taken photographs and videos showing couples who look a lot like them in cosy situations.

Both have fervently denied it was them in each instance and derided the claims as gutter politics.

As for rumours that they are getting hitched today, DAP members contacted expressed surprise.

A senior party member, however, said he called Zairil and asked him outright.

“He didn’t deny it. He said he read the rumours spreading on the Internet and didn’t plan on doing anything about it. So we don’t know if it is true or not.”

The party member pointed out that there is an unwritten practice in DAP that members holding posts should avoid getting into intimate relationships.

Zairil is DAP’s national assistant publicity secretary, Penang vice-chairman and Bukit Bendera MP. Dyana Sofya is DAP Socialist Youth national executive committee member.

“It is an unwritten rule. In practice, we close one eye unless there are complaints. Then the disciplinary committee will have a chat with the parties involved and find out what happened,” he said yesterday.

Repeated attempts to contact Zairil yesterday were unsuccessful.

The rumour is that the pair will tie the knot in June, after Hari Raya Puasa.

This will then be Zairil’s third marriage.

Although there are no references to Zairil’s marriage life in his personal blog, www.zairil.com, the revision history of Zairil’s Wikipedia entry shows that he was formerly married to Ulfah Zainal Abidin in 2008 and Dahlia Hamzah.

However, his past marriages were deleted from his page in August 2013, by a Wikipedia contributor called DidianaMatthews.
