Dept: Typhoon Doksuri caused erratic weather across Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: The tail effects of Typhoon Doksuri, which hit Vietnam yesterday, caused the weather havoc across Penang.

According to a meteorological department official, continuous thunderstorms are expected in Penang at least until tomorrow afternoon, although Doksuri had made landfall.

“The tail-end effects of Doksuri will continue to bring rain in Penang and other northern states for at least another day.

“Flash floods can also be expected as the high tide will block Penang’s waterways,” the official added.

Normally, Penang experiences high rain­fall in September and October due to the inter-monsoon season.

However, Typhoon Doksuri has made it worse.

The official said that on average, Penang receives about 16.5mm of rainfall in Septem­ber.

But the state Drainage and Irrigation Department rainfall stations recorded between 100mm and 270mm in just four hours yesterday morning.
