GEORGE TOWN: Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif is the new mayor of Penang Island City Council, replacing outgoing mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail.

Penang Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the appointment of Maimunah, who was the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president, would be from today until June 30, 2019.

Maimunah thanked the state government and promised to do her best.

“I also thank all the councillors, staff and the Seberang Prai community for their cooperation during the last six years.

“We still have a few projects in the pipeline running at different stages, such as the Butterworth Baharu project to revive Butter-worth town as well as other projects in Bukit Mertajam,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Maimunah started as the town and country planning officer at the then Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) from 1985 to 2003.

Later, she was the director of the MPPP Planning and Develop-ment Department from 2003 to 2009.

Maimunah was general manager of George Town World Heritage Incorporated until March 16, 2011, when she became the MPSP president.

Chow also announced the appointment of MPSP secretary Rozali Mohamud as the new MPSP president effective today until his retirement on Aug 14 next year.

“The MPSP engineering department director Rosnani Mahmod is the new MPSP secretary until June 30, 2019,” he told a press conference at Komtar yesterday.

Rozali was the MPSP Valuation and Property Management Depart-ment director before he took on the MPSP secretary post in 2011.

The swearing-in ceremony for MPSP will be held on Monday, while the ceremony for MBPP will be on Tuesday .
