IGP: Is activist Chong an investigator?

KOTA KINABALU: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic) wants to know why activist Peter Chong did not share the information he had on Pastor Raymond Koh with the police.

"If he really had information on the missing pastor, why didn’t he inform us? Why did he go there (southern Thailand) to look for the information by himself without telling anyone, including his family members, about it? Is he an investigator?" Khalid said.

He said Chong's "disappearance" had caused panic in his family and anxiety among others.

Chong returned from Thailand on April 16, claiming that he was abducted while gathering information on Koh.

Khalid said that police will not be opening an investigation paper on the former Petaling Jaya councillor's claim that he was abducted in Thailand as his case is still classified as a missing persons case.

"We heard that he had lodged a report claiming he was abducted when he reached Thailand," he said.

However, Khalid added that Chong did not tell police here that he was abducted in Thailand, and said that police will record a statement from Chong soon to verify his claims.

Chong disappeared after hinting on Facebook that he was being threatened, and this raised fears and questions among netizens and the authorities.

He however returned and told police that he was abducted in Haadyai while searching for leads on Koh's disappearance.

Koh was abducted from his car by a group of men in Jalan SS4B/10, Petaling Jaya, on Feb 13.

CCTV footage believed to be of the incident showed at least 15 men and three black SUVs involved in the abduction.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh was reported as saying that Chong had claimed that he went to Haadyai to meet a source for information on Koh's disappearance.
