Brief all MPs on N. Korean issue, says Azizah

Kuala Lumpur: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has called on the Home and Foreign ministries to brief all MPs on the ongoing controversy with North Korea.

She said it was important that all parliamentarians were clear on what was unfolding “to avoid saying the wrong things”.

“We in the Opposition want to know what exactly has happened. It has become diplomatically sour between countries and we don’t want to say things with no knowledge,” she said yesterday.

The Permatang Pauh MP said she met Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia on this together with Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul and Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad.

“The Speaker took it well. He was amicable,” she added.

Dr Wan Azizah said Batu Gajah MP V. Sivakumar would move a motion for the North Korean issue to be discussed in the Dewan Rakyat.

Sivakumar said he had submitted a motion to the Speaker’s Office to condemn North Korea’s move to detain 11 Malaysians.

“It has shocked Malaysians and we strongly condemn North Korea. We (the Opposition) regard this as a security threat,” he added.

Ng Wei Aik (DAP-Tanjong) told repor­ters that the party had formed a caucus to address the issue.

“It was decided that we send a peace mission involving both the Government and Opposition. It should be bipartisan,” he said, adding the proposed meeting should be held in a neutral country.
