Mothers in shock over kids’ deaths

JOHOR BARU: The last time Fai­zah Ishak saw her son was on Friday.

“He told me he wanted to go watch the Chingay procession at downtown Johor Baru.

“That was the last time we spoke. I can’t believe he’s gone,” sobbed the 41-year-old housewife.

Mohamad Shahrul Izwan Azzu­rai­mee, 14, was among one of eight cyclists who died in a tragic accident in Johor Baru in the wee hours yesterday.

They were mowed down by a car driven by a 22-year-old woman at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam at around 3.30am.

When met outside the Sultanah Aminah Hospital mortuary, Faizah said she received a call from her son’s friend at around 4am, telling that Mohamad Shahrul was invol­ved in an accident.

Together with her lorry driver husband Azzuraime Azik, 42, they quickly rushed to the hospital.

“Normally, he would cycle around our house in Kampung Seri Jaya.

“I was not aware that he went to town to meet up with his friends,” she said.

Shabariah Yusoff, 49, said her son Mohd Azhar Amir, 16, bought his RM200 bicycle using money he had earned from helping his aunt selling cakes after school.

“He was a good and quiet boy and hardly cause any problems,” said Shabariah, who works as a cleaner.

Mohd Azhar, a student of SM Permas Jaya 3, was the eighth child of 10 siblings.
