It was all so sudden, says survivor

JOHOR BARU: “I felt a sharp pain and could not move my legs,” said a survivor of a horrific road accident here which left eight people dead.

Cyclist Muhammad Zulfadli Yusri, 19, said a group of them had gathered at the corner of the road near the Mahmoodiah Muslim cemetery along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam when suddenly a car headed towards them.

“The next thing I remember was that I was writhing in pain on the ground,” he told reporters when met at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital yesterday.

Muhammad Zulfadli, who broke his right leg, said he was there for barely 10 minutes from his home in Stulang Baru when the incident occurred.

Another cyclist Muhamad Farhan Che Mat, 16, said it was a weekly affair for the group to gather and cycle around town during the wee hours until dawn.

“Most of us were caught off guard. We don’t know what hit us from behind and most of us went flying a few metres due to the impact,” he said, adding that the group had been planning to cycle to Dataran Bandaraya Johor Baru.

Abdul Samad Abdul Kadir, 16, said his first outing with the group turned tragic.

“We were planning to head to the Pandan area when some of us decided to race.

“I was uncomfortable with the idea and told them I was going to leave,” he said.
