Rescued: Aussie hikers lost in Cameron Highlands

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Search and rescue personnel have found two Australians who got lost during a hiking expedition at Gunung Brinchang here.

Marciela Alice Shirley and Adam Zhi Qiang, both 25, had embarked on their trek at the “01 Trail” at the hill at about 3.40pm on Monday.

District Fire and Rescue Department chief M. Haziq Hazmi said both realised they were lost about two hours later and contacted the emergency line for assistance.

“We dispatched two teams of three personnel to look for them.

“The first team was sent to the foot of the hill and searched a 1km diameter from the point where they were believed to have got lost.

“The second team searched at a wider area, within a 2km diameter from the trail,” he added.

M. Haziq said both hikers were found safe and sound near a river at about 9.50pm.

“They were both sent back to their hotel,” he said.

Cameron Highlands OCPD Deputy Supt Hasadid A. Hamid, who confirmed the incident, said the victims had not informed the police about their hiking trip.

“We strongly advise tourists or anyone wanting to go on a hiking expedition here to inform us beforehand,” he said.
