KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Negara has welcomed six new members from Umno as senators.

They are Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun, Wanita Umno exco member Datuk Rabiyah Ali, Kelantan Umno state liaison secretary Datuk Hanafi Mamat, Ayer Hitam division Wanita Umno chief Rahemah Idris, Seputeh division Umno chief Datuk Mustapa Kamal Mohd Yusoff and Puteri Umno assistant secretary Datuk Fahariyah Md Nordin.

The senators took their oath in front of Dewan Negara president Datuk S. A. Vigneswaran who advised them to carry out their duties according to the oath and reminded them to defend the Federal Constitution.

“I hope your good characters and personalities will set an example to all parliamentarians.

“Of late, I have been worried as there are some lawmakers who do not respect the dignity of the august House and have gone against Standing Orders and the Federal Constitution,” he said.

When met at the Parliament lobby later, Khairul Azwan said the appointment was a recognition for Umno Youth and was a big responsibility.

He said he would bring forth issues and aspirations of the youth and the agenda of de-radicalisation mentioned by the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“The narrative I am trying to create with the youth leadership is for a better future, tolerable, caring and loving society,” Khairul Azwan said.

Fahariyah said she would like to focus on issues concerning women and children.
