Ex-Anwar aide Saiful is now a budding entrepreneur

SAIFUL Bukhari Azlan is now a budding entrepreneur, manning one of the many stalls set up at the Putra World Trade Centre for the Umno general assembly.

“It has been eight years since I lodged that police report (against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim). I am happy to be moving on,” he said.

Saiful, who was once an aide of the former opposition leader, had lodged a police report accusing Anwar of sodomising him on June 29, 2008.

Saiful and his wife Nik Suryani Megat Deraman are partners at Nang Surya, a business selling women’s clothing, bags, accessories, batik and songket.

“It was a last-minute decision to set up a stall here.

“Somebody pulled out, so we were only given five days’ notice to gather our products from Terengganu,” he said.

Nang Surya is based in Terengganu, with a store in the state and an online store that caters to orders in Malaysia and from overseas.

Saiful, 30, said that all songket and batik were unique.

Former TV3 newscaster Nik Suryani, 36, said the traditional batik and songket were introduced to Nang Surya earlier this year.

“I first started with handbags and blazers,” she said.

“As a newscaster, I loved wearing smart blazers. I wanted to also design blazers with statement prints,” said Nik Suryani.

She said she left the media industry after 15 years to “do something new”.

“I’ve always loved handbags and fashion, and my husband encouraged me to pursue it as a business,” she said.

Other than their fashion business, the husband-wife team also has a political and media consultancy firm.

Saiful and Nik Suryani are parents of a two-year-old boy. A second child is due in March next year.
